Tym Yee

Tym Yee is an emerging artist based in Sydney. He uses expressive marks of oil paint to explore and document simultaneous moments of movement and stillness in the Australian landscape. Yee is currently completing a PhD at Macquarie University, researching how art-making can form part of a scholarly research methodology. In 2020 he was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship at Parliament House to pursue developing his creative practice methodology at Harvard University.

BIRD SERIES: “This collection of native bird paintings was inspired by the broad cast of feathery visitors who like to perch on my apartment balcony railing. Cockatoos, magpies, mynas, kookaburras, rainbow lorikeets and rosellas often drop in like house guests, dancing about, laughing and only occasionally tearing up the place. Their intriguing characters and exaggerated gestures remind me of past dinner parties and help me to imagine future ones, where friends share stories and captivate rooms”.

STILL LIFE: “In this collection of paintings I have attempted to challenge the daintiness often ascribed to floral still life paintings. Abstract shapes and simple blocks of colour construct vague backgrounds which gesture to life’s every day settings, without glorifying or celebrating them; an unset tabletop, an unremarkable windowsill or console, perhaps. This is my personal response to the many pretty and delicate still life paintings often circulated on Instagram in which the subject is depicted perfectly. Rather than painting complex scenes that give away an entire narrative, the works here focus on just one object, a gentle reminder to viewers to appreciate the simple, little and intimate things. Oftentimes they’re enough”.
