Neil Tomkins (b.1987) is a multidisciplinary artist working in photography, installation, textiles, print with a focus on painting. It is with a deep connection to the Australian landscape that Tomkins narrative derives. His connection to space and movement act as an echo chamber for a push and pull that has been described as both dynamic and spirited.
Using photography and collage as a platform to explore the process of painting, Tomkins unpicks concepts of interconnectivity, spatial awareness and alchemy with a clear sighted joyfulness that is beyond his years. His recent work has been an adventurous probing into our connections to space and country through the individual lens of the artist hand with a focus on how this relates to collective consciousness.
He often breaks down the subject matter into fragments and the work alludes to a connection through displacement. His current body of work is a further unveiling of subject and composition through the use of collage based photography and its translation into painting.
