Raised in Oakland California, Emily first moved to Australia in 2005 and now splits her time between downtown Sydney and Gunning NSW. February sees a fresh release of her cityscapes depicting historic Sydney, a follow up to her sold out 2019 solo exhibition ‘Familiar City.’ Emily is also a former Mosman Art Prize finalist for her painting of Sydney’s iconic harbourscape.
Emily focuses on a deeper examination of her City-bound surrounds, exploring the rhythms and detailing of historic Sydney brought into focus through the present day, with a temporality suggested by fleeting atmospherics.
“My paintings originate from my photography, from happenstance and occurrence I encounter in my daily life. The Sydney I see is a place of pattern and line, light and obfuscation, logic and quirk. I paint the City where I live: the work is a refraction of my own narrative. Each piece aims to catalogue and communicate a passing moment – there’s a tension where our desire for permanence collides with the temporality of human experience.”
